Game Design Process
"Untitled Chicken Game" is a chaotic platformer set in a space lab where players control a genetically modified chicken escaping captivity. The game emphasizes physics-based movement, where players shoot eggs to propel themselves and defeat enemies. The design shifted from tight, confined spaces to larger, open areas after playtesting, creating a fast-paced "obstacle gauntlet" experience that complements the unique movement system.
Narrative Design
Players embody a rebellious chicken designed for humanity's survival in space. Refusing its fate, the chicken fights for freedom by blasting through enemies and obstacles. Environmental cues like "EXIT" signs and enemy placement reinforce the urgency and rebellion central to the narrative.
Programming
As lead programmer, I developed core mechanics such as egg-shooting propulsion, enemy AI behaviors, and interaction systems using Unreal Engine blueprints. The egg mechanic includes a cooldown system for balance while retaining chaotic gameplay. AI dynamically reacts to player actions, and collision detection ensures smooth interactions with platforms and obstacles.
Level Design
The level design focuses on creating challenging yet fun environments that leverage the chicken's unpredictable movement. Platforms, saw blades, drones, and enemies are strategically placed to test precision while maintaining flow. Open spaces were introduced after playtesting to enhance player freedom and engagement.
Shaders & Aesthetics
The game uses vibrant pixel art combined with dynamic lighting effects to create an engaging atmosphere. Space-themed backgrounds and animations for egg shooting and enemy interactions add visual feedback to gameplay. Assets from OpenGameArt and Itch.io were integrated seamlessly into the aesthetic design.
Gameplay & Interactions
Players navigate platforms by shooting eggs for propulsion while defeating enemies along the way. The chaotic movement system creates unpredictability, which was intentionally preserved after playtesting feedback. Obstacles like saw blades and drones increase difficulty as players progress through levels.
Game Flow
The game begins with simple mechanics before introducing more complex challenges like moving platforms and aggressive enemies. Levels build in difficulty, culminating in intense sequences that test mastery of movement and combat mechanics.
Reflections
As lead programmer and level designer, I focused on creating a cohesive experience that balances chaotic fun with challenging gameplay. Playtesting revealed that open spaces better complemented the movement system, leading to significant design pivots. "Untitled Chicken Game" showcases my expertise in programming physics-based mechanics and designing engaging levels for fast-paced platformers.
